Stories and Perspectives from the Farm
Pigs and the Flu, Awful Dry, Prop 12 - Enough is Enough
Farm Updates
Ugh, Pigs are Still Sick
Other than the eclipse, the biggest thing happening on the farm is trying to care for our sick pigs. They have the flu. And like humans, the virus needs to run its course. I know, I know. You are probably saying, you talked about this last week. Yes, I did. But they are still sick.
We are trying to make them feel better by giving them aspirin and other medications. The news is they look a little better today—not as much hard breathing, so hopefully they will continue to improve. Rumor mill has it that there are many pigs in our area sick. Windy conditions don’t help in a hog dense area, which is where we live.
At the end of the day, it stinks.
Hopefully next week I have better news.

It’s Dry
Well, it’s no secret that our winter was very mild. In fact, so mild we received little snow or moisture. All of our open ditches are dry. After a normal winter, they are full of water. Yes, I know, watch what you wish for. But we could use more moisture.
It’s still early for spring. We have time. Hopefully with some rain.
Some Days Are Just Too Much
Are there days when you feel overwhelmed? Like too much on your plate? One of my biggest weakness is not knowing how or when to say no.
But I know I need to do that. I feel like I am letting people down when I say no. I need to remind myself that I need to care for myself. Still not easy.
I need to shut my brain down and ask for God’s guidance when I struggle.
Can anyone else relate?
In the News
Prop 12 . . . Again
Prop 12 isn’t going anywhere. It’s time this is fixed, preferably through the Farm Bill. Thank you to Lori Stevermer to addressing this issue again.
We always knew it would be expensive for farmers to make the costly on-farm compliance modifications that expert veterinarians agreed were neither necessary nor desirable. Few anticipated how much the mandates would hurt consumers, too. Lori Stevermer

Travel Recommendations
I love the North Shore of Minnesota. It is one of Minnesota’s sweet spots for travel. If you have a chance, I highly recommend traveling on the North Shore! I am due a North Shore fix myself.
“Whatever you think you can do or believe you can do, begin it. Action has magic, grace, and power in it.”
Hopefully we will be making progress towards planting. We are looking at temperatures near 80 degrees this weekend.
Do you have any questions for me? Feel free to ask!
Until next week!
My man, Nutrien Ag’s Eric Snodgrass, says a big low is headed North from California next week. Rain is on the way. Hope your hogs get better.
